Take a listen…

Let me give you my perspective

A great recording is more than just a simple documentation of an event; it's an opportunity to offer a unique and compelling perspective, a fresh way of experiencing the music. As a musician myself, I don't settle for just creating technically excellent recordings; I strive to infuse them with my own musical perspective, making them stand out and connect with listeners on a deeper level. Through my work, I aim to inspire fellow musicians to approach their craft with a new sense of creativity, and to help audiences appreciate the beauty and richness of music.

Better in Dolby Atmos

Stereo recordings are the most common way people listen to music, as they allow engineers to accurately capture the sound of instruments and layer multiple instruments on top of each other. However, stereo recordings fall short in representing real space.

Dolby Atmos is a surround format that creates an imaginary space for each recorded sound to come to life. Unlike other surround formats, an Atmos recording can be heard on both multiple-speaker configurations and on headphones using binaural recording. Although primarily used for movies, Atmos has recently become widespread in music production.

Apple created the term "Spatial Audio" to make binaural recordings easier to understand. Spatial audio recordings translate the space of a surround mix onto headphones and can use your unique head shape using a technology known as a head-related transfer function. My YouTube videos are encoded in this spatial format, so it's ideal to listen using headphones or earbuds. Soon, my recordings will be available on Apple Music, where you can experience Dolby Atmos in any configuration, including Personalized Spatial Audio, which customizes the binaural recording to you.

I prefer mixing recordings in Dolby Atmos because it adds a new dimension to music by allowing me to represent space in addition to frequency and time. This immerses listeners in a surreal space, and instruments have a sense of tangibility that isn't possible in stereo. Atmos is also unique because it not only allows the mixer to place surrounds around the listener, but also above. I am interested in capturing existing works as well as creating new works in surround.

An example of how a Dolby Atmos recording is captured. This recording is available below to experience in binaural. Recorded in Griswold Hall at the Peabody Institute on March 21, 2022.

FAQs

  • Because I offer a large variety of services, I don’t have a standard rate; instead, I give an estimate of what I would charge for each unique recording. I base these estimates on these factors, in this order: the amount of time I spend on the project from start to finish; inclusion of single- or multi-camera video; travel to the location of the recording; and the depth involvement in the recording process. I also understand that recordings are expensive, so I try to offer the lowest rate possible given the circumstances of your recording. If you have questions about pricing, don’t hesitate to ask!

  • I am based out of Baltimore, Maryland. I can travel to the location of your recording within reason, and this travel is a factor when determining how much I charge.

  • The list of services are generalizations meant to show the scope of what I can provide. I will always work to meet your specific needs on a case-by-case basis.

  • As a percussionist myself, recording percussion music is a passion for me. However, I have recorded every kind of music from jazz to rock and pop music to live orchestra concerts. I also work as a wedding videographer and a podcast editor. Whatever it is that you need captured, I can do it.
